Do you need to play them in order?
No. Every game stands on its own, and the developer says so in the official FAQ. Recurring ideas and small nods will mean more if you have played the others, but you will not be lost.
Which one should you start with?
- Want to try the idea for free? Play the original We Were Here. It is short, and it will tell you quickly whether you and your partner enjoy this kind of game.
- Want the newest and biggest? Start with We Were Here Tomorrow on October 20.
- Playing on different platforms? Forever was the first game with crossplay, and Tomorrow has it too. The three games before Forever do not.
What all of them have in common
Two explorers end up trapped and separated, each sees only half of every puzzle, and the only way out is talking it through over a walkie-talkie. That idea has not changed since 2017, and it is the reason the series has no single-player mode or split screen.
